This is my discussion post for chapters 13-16 of Hallowed by Cynthia Hand. WARNING: There are spoilers for the first sixteen chapters of Hallowed and for all of Unearthly in this post.

On the way home from the prom, Clara slams on the brakes when she sees Samjeeza standing in the middle of the road. Then she aims and floors it. They hit him, or they hit something, and they crash. Wendy, in the backseat, is injured. While Clara searches for her phone, Samjeeza approaches the car with it. Samjeeza tells Clara that her mom is hiding informattion about her purpose. He makes Clara call her mom, but her mom is too weak to come for her the way he hopes. Clara blocks him from her mind and tells him her mom is on her way.

Samjeeza allows Clara to call 9-1-1 and he tells the operator that he’s come across an accident with an unconscious boy and girl. Tucker isn’t unconscious, though, so Samjeeza turns to make him so. Clara goes into glory to protect him, which angers Samjeeza. Clara continues to hold her glory when they hear sirens. Mr. Phibbs shows up before the ambulance. He makes an arrow from glory and shoots it at Samjeeza. Samjeeza is wounded and fades away.

At home the next day, Clara learns that the school and her house are both on hallowed grounds. She will be safe from Samjeeza in both places. Clara and Jeffrey are only allowed to go to school, escorted by Mr. Phibbs or Billy (who is to become their guardian), and home.

Clara finally tells Angela about her vision of the funeral. Angela is mad that Clara told Christian and not her, but their discussion is interrupted by a commotion across the cafeteria. It’s Kimber and Jeffrey. He’s just dumped her in front of everyone. Angela tries to steer the conversation back on topic, but Clara suddenly senses Samjeeza. He’s in the field behind the school. Everyone is accounted for except Jeffrey, who’s walking in the parking lot like he’s listening to something. Clara chases after him as he heads for Samjeeza, who is disguised as a black dog. Mr. Phibbs comes out and Samjeeza disappears.

Samjeeza returns to the field every day. He doesn’t hurt anyone, but he follows Clara home. Clara’s mom teaches her to block empathy to protect herself from him.

Clara is hanging around the house feeling sad when suddenly she feels joy. The doorbell rings, and when she goes to answer it, it’s a White Wing angel, one she recognizes: her father Michael. Their parents tell Clara and Jeffrey the story of how they met. He saved her during the 1906 earthquake and he’s the one who told her that she’s an angel-blood. She was 16 then. She married him when she was 99. He was allowed to stay with her for 7 years, then he had to go back to his angel duties. They have seen each other once or twice a year since then.

This makes Clara and Jeffrey Triplares: 3/4 angel-bloods. Triplares are rare. They have almost the same abilities as full angels but they also have free will. That means the dark side wants them. Jeffrey feels betrayed because his parents have hidden all of this from him.

The next time Clara feels Samjeeza at school, she calls her dad. Michael goes to the field to confront Samjeeza and scares him away. Michael wants to meet Tucker, so Clara finds him in the hallway and introduces them. After school, Clara takes her dad to meet Angela and can feel her jealousy that Clara has more angel blood that she does.

This school year went by crazy fast. It’s almost summer.

Samjeeza not knowing how to use a cell phone was funny, but I really shouldn’t talk. I don’t have one either and while I have an iPod Touch and can use apps, if you handed me an iPhone, I wouldn’t know how to make a call.

What do you think about Angela’s idea that Tucker isn’t at the funeral because he and Clara break up? If that’s true, I think that’s a pretty awful thing for him to do, to stay away from Clara when she needs all the support she can get.

Clara’s father is an angel! So Clara and Jeffrey are Triplates. I knew Angela was going to be jealous. She seemed to enjoy being the only one in their group who is half angel-blood.

I want a square ice cream cone! The Rainey Creek Country Store and their square cones are real. I may never make it to Swan Valley, Idaho, but it looks like there’s a place in Nashville that has it too. (AND cinnamon rolls!) That’s a much easier drive for me.

Before I moved here, I never got the whole love-triangle thing. You know, in movies or romance novels or whatnot, where there’s one chick that all the guys are drooling over, even though you can’t see anything particularly special about her. But oh, no, they both must have her.

And she’s like, oh dear, however will I choose? William is so sensitive, he understands me, he swept me off my feet, oh misery, blubber, blubber, but how can I go on living without Rafe and his devil-may-care ways and his dark and only-a-little-abusive love? Upchuck. So unrealistic, I always thought.

Joke’s on me, I guess.
